As promised, I'm going to keep the posts coming. There is nothing I love more than enjoying a cup of coffee (or let's be honest, several cups of coffee) and reading the "interwebs" (as Chad calls it) on the weekend.  Here are a few links I loved this week:

  1. Manhattan Nest started on his bathroom renovation, and what a back story it has. This makes me really eager to begin updating ours-minus finding all the surprises.
  2. How to plant a succulent garden without making a huge mess, Orlando, shows us how.
  3. This D.I.Y. lamp is beautiful
  4. I'm trying to learn how to use Photoshop and found this tutorial really helpful.
  5. Can't wait to go see The Grand Budapest Hotel this afternoon. This review sealed the deal.
  6. What a pretty moodboard from 7th House on the Left -summer surfing sign me up.
  7. Lord knows I love me some wallpaper. If I was rich these would all be contenders.
  8. Such an amazing kitchen renovation-maybe for our next house!
  9. Finally, you have to go see Colleen's blog ARCTICdeco. Not only does it makes me miss Nunavut but you should see all the creative projects she gets up to. Her review of the Nest may just be enough to persuade Chad!

Iqaluit Condo After-Part 3

We are now the proud owner of a cat with diabetes. We couldn't bring ourselves to put him down so now we are those crazy people that give their cat insulin and dress them in baby clothes (I swear we only do one of those things).

Anyhow.....back to the final instalment of our Iqaluit condo. Just when we thought we were done Chad found a solution to our hideous countertop issues. Since equally ugly laminate was our only previous choice I decided to hear him out. Not even really hear him out because at that point I think he had already ordered the tile online. We went with a white hexagon tile and a black trim tile. We simply ripped out the old countertop, secured plywood sheets cut to size, then glued and grouted the tile. Chad did most of the cutting on a tile saw we rigged up and I helped to to push the tiny tiles through. I was also the grout cleaner-upper and assistant. If you've ever cleaned grout you'll know how much fun that was. Chad also spent a lot of time pretending he was surgeon and I had to hand him instruments-stat!

After finishing the bathroom(s) we tiled the kitchen countertop. I had already done a green backsplash to match the green countertops but once we redid the counter the green really looked hideous. We thought it would be easy to just rip down the old tiles since they had been an inexpensive ebay purchase and replace them with new white subway tile (like in the bathroom). They ended up taking down all the drywall with them. We (Chad) had to replace (cut, tape, mud-whatever else is involved in drywalling) it all before we started re-tiling. I don't think he was too excited about this but I think the end result made it worth it.

After all the tiling I also decided to repaint the kitchen and hallway from the bright green to a more classic grey. This also lead to painting the living room from beige to a very pale grey. That's it for our Iqaluit condo- I promise. Now it's time to move on to your new apartment in Montreal. Even though we're renters now I've still had (and have) plenty of projects in the works- like covering up our space pod shower.

The funny thing about painting is that once you decide to paint one room the other one suddenly looks worse-at least that's how it always works for me. Or,you are perhaps not the greatest painter of walls (despite your art degree) and you manage to inadvertently paint a wall you didn't intend too therefore making it necessary to painting everything. The condo started out the same builder beige a lot of places are. Someone had come in and sprayed every last inch, even the baseboards and trim were beige. I hate beige. It started with the staircase after moving furniture and scuffing a wall. There was no paint left over in the house and my attempt to match it failed. So what started out a 'why not paint that one wall grey' ended in almost every room being painted.

After seeing quite a few tutorials online like Kathleen's and 4men1lady's we (again I mean Chad) decided to give it a shot. Chad did all the measuring and taping and I did all the painting. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be (probably because I didn't do the measuring and taping) and I really loved the end result.

We also changed out all the 'boob lights' with industrial outdoor lighting I found off Amazon.com. I think they were maybe $20 each. You see similar light fixtures sold as indoor lighting in specialty lighting stores for hundreds of dollars. The vintage dry cleaning sign was from Etsy.

Lastly our bedroom. I already had one lime green bedside table and then used the leftover paint from the dining room table to paint the other one. Pretty good match if I do say so myself. The lamps were vintage from ebay and the wall hanging was something I purchased while on vacation in Mexico.

So that's it for our first round of renovations. Round two we tackled the countertops, changed the kitchen backsplash and repainted the main level.

So as soon we moved into our condo I made Chad get to work. It was so exciting to be able to do whatever you wanted with your own place. I'd obviously been storing up things I wanted to use in the new place-wallpaper, rugs, bookcases, artwork- since it took almost a year for us to move in (thanks government of Nunavut). By the time we left our old apartment it was so jammed packed with things that you had to crawl over furniture to get anywhere. We managed to fill a three bedroom place from a one bedroom.

Looking back at some of my choices now- I do cringe a little- it is a bit to bright, has a bit too many patterns and a bit too many colours- but it was a fun place. Most of my choices were purely because I had  to work around items that we already had and couldn't easily change out without 'sea-lifting' new stuff. A lot of it was hand me downs and second hand furniture left over from our student days. It was fun to work within those constraints though- repainting and repurposing.

The first thing we did when we moved in was put up wallpaper in the living room. I tend to use the word 'we' liberally around here. When what I really mean is "it was my idea and I made Chad do it while I pretended to assist while mostly just getting in the way and asking when it would be done". So thanks Chad. Turns out he is actually handy and all those years of helping his Dad build weird machines like some pneumatic wood chopping thing was helpful.

The wallpaper was from Walmart, found after many hours of scouring the internet for the infamous Cole & Sons Woods paper that costs a fortune. In the end while not really an exact match (haha!) it was seriously a fraction of the cost.

The couches were old Ikea ones we'd had forever with newer Bemz covers on them. I chose them mainly for their ability to hide cat hair (and they did a fabulous job at that). The table was something Chad's parents found at a garage sale which I painted over to cover up all the stains, scratches and gouges. The chairs were Goodwill finds we'd also had forever. The two red chairs I salvaged from my old office, left behind after a previous accounting office moved out. The coffee table was also Chad's old Ikea one. The flokati rug I purchased online and while I loved the look of it- it's ability to hide all matter of dirt and pet hair was both good and bad. I also had a heart attack anytime anyone ate or drank near it, so I don't know if I would ever get another one. The arc lamp was given to us when Chad's cousin left town. Most people called it the interrogation lamp as it broke during the move and always hung dangerously low in the middle of the room.

We also changed out every single one of the light fixtures- starting with the kitchen's fluorescent lighting. The kitchen pass-through was also ridiculous but it we found out it would have required moving plumbing to open it up so it had to stay.

Another one of my favourite things was the blown up pictures in Ikea frames I made. I used old family photos and sent them to be printed in large sizes- it was a cheap and easy way to make large artwork.

After Chad's near perfect execution of the wallpaper we moved onto redoing the floors. Well, I think we tiled the backsplash in the kitchen first but let's talk about the floors. It was laminate flooring and while it looked good from a distance it really did show every speak of dirt. I would probably go with a lighter colour flooring and would pay more to get real wood. It was definitely one of the biggest improvements going from the 'vomit camo' to fake wood.

Here was the kitchen in it's intermediate stage. I thought there was no way to redo the countertops. I went to the hardware store only to find out they sold a few colours of laminate countertops- green, puke and pink puke. Sending a solid surface stone countertop up on the yearly sealift ship would not only be expensive but also likely to break. So I embraced the green and went with a green backsplash and green walls. (We also changed out the faucet and installed a dishwasher).

Just a reminder about how beautiful the floor use to be

With the green already going on in the kitchen I decided to paint the hall and use up the leftover wallpaper in the entryway.

So that's it for the lower level. I got tired pretty fast of the green and Chad also decided that he had found a way to solve the countertop problem. We also love a good project so it wasn't long before I was painting upstairs.

A few things I'm reminded of as I look these pictures over. I now need a break from red and lime green. I still love a good black & white pattern. Gray is still my go to colour. You'll see how I went from this intermediate let's call it my 'lime green stage' to my 'gray stage' later.

Our Iqaluit Condo-The Before

When we moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut we never thought we would purchase a house or condo. It's generally hard enough to get an apartment to rent if your work does not provide one. People rent out single rooms in their home for over $1000/month. Not only is there a real shortage of housing available but when a property comes on the market it is generally for sale over the $500,000 mark.

The cost of transporting materials for building is expensive, due to the fact that like everything else it has to be brought by boat (once a year) or flown in. There are only a few construction companies in town, land is leased and new leases are done by lottery. It is not an option for many people to buy. The territorial government, in an effort to get employees to purchase homes and not live in subsidized government apartments, converted several apartment complexes into condos and we were approved to buy one.

Our unit-top two floors
Our unit was at the end-hence the staircase from hell
But we did have a nice view
As you can see buildings are usually nothing special on the outside. Ours was also nothing special on the inside when we first visited it.

View towards the entrance-notice the beautiful flooring we coined "vomit camo", the dark wood grain doors, the "boob lights" and the beige paint everywhere

Look at the great sofa included in our living room/dining room

Upstairs hallway complete with more "vomit camo" and floating "boob lights"
Master bedroom-nothing too offensive
So despite all it's flaws we went ahead and jumped in, confident in the fact that we could somehow replace the ugly part of the flooring and maybe just paint a few walls. It started all so innocently. Tomorrow I'll show you the 'intermediate phase'- if you want a sneak peek of the condo (before we redid the kitchen) take a look at our Apartment Therapy Tour.

Hello Blog!

Oh hello there blog. It's been a while. Well it's the end of 2012 and a lot has happened since 2007 for anyone who is interested. First we moved from Edmonton, Alberta to the Arctic. Well back to the Arctic because no one seems to ever really leave the Arctic. We moved to Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. We lived there until just recently when we moved to Montreal.

This is an old picture of me looking really happy to be in our first apartment. We had been living in a tiny hotel room with two cats and no fridge or any kind of kitchen. It was the middle of winter so I hung meat out the room window and hoped the ravens wouldn't get it. We took the first apartment we were offered. I think it use to be an office. As you can see the couch blocked the entrance to the bedroom and the door to the bathroom was practically right in the living room. It was also painted a very strange shade of light pink with those gold 'boob' lights everywhere.

Here was the view from our front door

So I'm not painting a very rosy picture so far but Nunavut does have a stunningly beautiful landscape

We had a snowmobile and spent most of the winter going on adventures like this

We moved out of our pink apartment and bought a condo. If you want a sneak peek take a look at the Apartment Therapy tour. If you've ever had any questions about Nunavut read through the comments as there were many related to what it's like living in a remote location.

That's why I've decided to start this blog again. To document all the changes we made there as well as in our new apartment because I love a good DIY and love a deal but don't want it to look that way.

Our condo was pretty ugly to start with but we spent a year renovating with what limited materials we could get. Seeing the changes we could make with fairly simple renovations- simple because I had the idea and Chad had to implement them-really fuelled my love of design and all things design related.
